Sending Schools to Kids™: Brilliant Earth partners with DDI to bring education to mining communities
Published on 20 April 2015
Brilliant Earth and the Diamond Development Initiative are proud to partner together to bring education to children in mining communities.
Brilliant Earth is the first sponsor of one of eight planned mobile schools in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Set to open with an official inauguration ceremony on May 10th, 2015, the “Brilliant Mobile School” will welcome 25 students from the artisanal mining communities surrounding the Lungundi mine, some 30 km from Tshikapa City, in the Kasai West Province.
Mobile schools consist of travelling teachers and portable materials that are brought to a mining community for a condensed school year.
“In our ongoing projects with artisanal miners, one thing became clear: they were concerned for their children’s futures. For these communities, schools are often far away and too dangerous to get to, so children miss out on formal education and many end up working in the mining fields.” said Dorothée Gizenga, Executive Director of DDI.
“Education is crucial to improving children’s prospects. This is why we are sending schools to kids. We’re grateful to Brilliant Earth for joining us and these communities in piloting the first school”, adds Ian Smillie, Chair of the DDI Board.
The CEO and Founder of Brilliant Earth, Beth Gerstein said: “Brilliant Earth is proud to lead the way in sponsoring such an innovative school and is honored to have it carry our name. We are always seeking new and effective ways to give back and encourage responsible development in mining communities.”
The ethically-focused jeweler has already supported a number of DDI programs, including the creation of the Development Diamond Standards™ and the Youth-in-Mining project in Sierra Leone.
The Diamond Development Initiative (DDI) promotes sustainable development through education, policy, dialogue and projects working directly with artisanal miners and their communities. Mobile Schooling is SendingSchools to Kids™. www.ddiglobal.org
