An estimated 1.5 million people mine diamonds artisanally in Africa and South America. Even though these individuals are responsible for 15% of the total gem diamond production worldwide, they earn less than a dollar a day.

Many of them are children. Their work is dirty, unsafe and it is often dangerous. The areas where they work and live are breeding grounds for insecurity and disease resulting from poverty, underdevelopment and overcrowding. This can be changed.

With a donation to DDII, you can help artisanal miners and their families live better, more productive lives, contributing to the growth and development of the countries where they work. And you can help them become an appreciated and respected part of the diamond value chain. You can contribute to the establishment of verifiable standards for diamonds that are mined ethically, in ways that are environmentally sound, and which do not involve child miners.

With your help, DDII will help transform the legacy of violence and underdevelopment associated with artisanal diamond mining into a developmentally sound enterprise, where people can earn decent livelihoods in peace. All donations go towards creating a positive development impact in artisanal diamond mining communities.
