The Anglo American Group Foundation contributes to the formalization of the artisanal diamond mining sector as a regular major supporter of the Diamond Development Initiative and its programs in favour of artisanal diamond miners and their communities.
Jonathan Samuel, Group Head of Social Performance for Anglo American, says “The Anglo American Group Foundation is excited by DDI’s ability to catalyse systemic change in the artisanal mining sector, benefiting miners, their communities and, ultimately, diamond consumers worldwide.”
The Anglo American Group Foundation was founded in 2005 and is funded by Anglo American plc, one of the world’s largest mining companies, which prides itself on being a responsible business partner. Anglo American seeks to ensure that its impacts contribute to sustainable livelihoods in the communities in which it operates and the Foundation was founded on the same principles.
The Antwerp World Diamond Centre is helping improve the conditions of artisanal diamond miners and their communities by providing regular operational support to DDI.
Stéphane Fischler, President, says, “The Antwerp World Diamond Centre firmly believes in the work of DDI, and has been a partner of DDI for several years. The organization is doing exceptional work in formalizing the artisanal diamond industry, and in inserting ethics and good business practices in the diamond value chain. The Maendeleo Diamond Standards clearly demonstrate that artisanal diamond mining can be done in a sustainable and responsible way, supporting and improving the livelihood of millions of families.”
